The San Diego Council on Literacy is nationally recognized for engaging in diverse and successful partnerships for literacy. These partnerships enhance the availability and quality of literacy services for those in our community who need and request basic skills instruction. In addition to the Literacy Network (San Diego County's primary literacy service providers), Council on Literacy partners include businesses, institutes of higher education, community-based organizations, health-care providers, local governments, school districts, workforce investment boards, The San Diego Union-Tribune and other media, philanthropists, literacy volunteers, tutors, teachers, students, and others.
How the Council is working to make San Diego County a more literate community:
• Leads the San Diego County Literacy Network
• Raises literacy awareness
• Leads efforts to engage elected officials in literacy efforts
• Operates the Countywide Literacy Referral Line
• Provides funding to literacy programs
• Provides staffing to the Literacy Network
• Provides correctional lenses for low-income students
• Supports distribution of new books to low-income children
• Presents the Countywide Adult Learner Conference
• Co-sponsors the READ/San Diego Annual Tutor Conference
• Provides technical assistance and training
• Conducts research & manages special literacy projects
Last year, 72,000 individuals were served by the Literacy Network. These individuals received instruction that improved their reading, writing, math, and computer-use skills. Many adults who were served were also assisted in preparing their children to be successful students.
